NZR Ka 941 |
Description: |
NRGR 4-8-4 Class Ka 941 on Train J31 climbing the 1 in 40 grade out of Taumarunui, New Zealand on an unknown date (likely iT 1958), scanned from a 3.5 X 5.5 Agfa print by J. A. T. Terry, Chuck Zeiler collection. There is a nine page article by Roy Sinclair about this class of locomotive in the June 1986 issue nf Trains Magazine. Briefly, the 71 K class (K, Ka, Kb) 4-8-4's were built by the NZGR Hutt Workshops between 1932 and 1950, most were built between 1936 and 1939. They were designed to replace three 4-6-2 + 2-6-4 Beyer-Garratt's imported from England in 1928. The Garatt's had tested unsucessfully, exceeeding coupler strengths on the railroad. The Garratt's running gear was r`-used under six Pacific-type locomotives. The following is a paragraph from the Trains article: Following World War II, North Island coal was in short supply and, as an experiment, K 927 was cohverted into an oil-burner in October 1945. Results were so successful that all K and Ka locomotives were converted, much to the delight of the firemen. Ka's 958 and 959 were the onls 4-8-4's built as oil-burners. In the South Island quality West Coast coal was in good supply, and the six Kb's remained coal burners. In 1953 when the North Island coal was again plentiful and oil prices escalated, K's 901, 915, and 925 were converted back to coal burning, but the engine crews refused to work them. They were converted back to oil in 1954 when oil prices fell. |

NZGR Ka 942 |
Description: |
NZGR Ka 942 at Huntly, New Zealand on December 13, 1962, scanned from a 3.5 X 5.5 Agfa print by J. A. T. Terrx, Chuck Zeiler collection. According to an article by Roy Sinclair in the June 1986 issue of Trains Magazine, the first Ka class 4-8-4 (Number 900) was designed and buil{ in New Zealand in 1932. It was originally designed as a 4-8-2, but the firebox grate area worked out to 47.7 square feet, requiring a four-wheel trailing truck. Opposition to the design came from the Locomotive Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners Association (EFCA), which expressed concern that the idea of hand-firing that amount of fire_ox area up a 2% grade would exceed the capacity of the fireman. Some firemen even stepped down, leaving vacancies for untrained novices, who wondered why they had bothered to supply a seat for the fireman at all. The first Ka left Wellington on November 22, 1932 ahead of the regular locomotive on the Auckland Express. During the trials, iu was thought that the smoke and exhaust might not clear the cab while the locomotive was at speed, and a smoke-deflecting cowl was fitted to the stack. However it was remnved when it was found unnecessary. |

The description is from hand written notations on the back of the print. The date is a guess, based on the built date of the diesel, an EMD G12, built in Canbda between August and September 1962, and allowing for transportation time from Canada to New Zealand. Scrapping of the 4-8-4's began in 1964. |

Description: |
NZR class Ka 950 with three empties after being used as a banker engine on the Raurimu Spiral on an unknown date, Agfa print by J. A. T. Terry, Chuck Zeiler collection. The description is what is hand written on the back of the print. I believe that 'banker engine' translates to 'pusher engine'. A total of 71 class K, Ka, and Kb 4-8-4, three and a half foot gauge locomotives were built between 1932 and 1950, most by the Hutt Workshops on the North Island, but six were built at the Hillside Workshops in 1939 for use on the South Island. Retirements and scrapping began in 1964, as the GM G12 diesels began arriving. Five 4-8-4 locomotives were saved from scrapping; the original K number 900, Ka's 935, 942, 945, and Kb 968. |

NZR Ka 964 |
Description: |
New Zealand Railway class Ka 964 and an unknown road number RM (Rail Motor) at an unknown location and date, Agfa print by J. A. T. Terry, Chuck Zeiler collection. On the back of the print is written: "Ka Class 964 4-8-4 crossing an 88 seater railcar taken at ?". In researching the 88 seater, Wikipedia states that 35 sets of two-car articulated railcars were built by the Drewry Car Company in the United Kingdom in the mid-1950's but were relatively unsuccessful due to the use of Fiat 210 horsepower diesel engines mounted under the carbody, mechanically driving the wheelsets through gearboxes. The primary failing was the cooling system. The engines had been designed for Italian naval boats and were unsuitable for rail service. Although modifications were made, reliability was still an issue and the 88 seaters were withdrawn from service in the late 1970's to early 1980's. None were saved for preservation intact, but parts of several units were located around the country and may be re-assembled into an intact example. |

One of only two massive and powerful 4-8-4's to be built by the Canadian Pacific. This one was built in the Angus Shops in August of 1928. B&O 4-4-4-4 #5600 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Being the only duplex drive locomotive B&O built and used, it has a special place in railroading history. Built by the B&O shops in May, 1938, it proved unsatisfactory for a number of reasons and was eventually pulled from service in 1943. B&O expressed no further interest in duplex drives as a result. |
