Chesapeake Beach Railway #5 |
| Description: |
Built by the Pittsburgh Locomotive & Car Works in May of 1899 with construction number #1953, big #5 was officially delivered to the Chesapeake Beach Railway on May 15, 1899. Labelled by both management and railfans alike as the fastest locomotive on the CB's roster, #5 would spend it's entire working career hauling speedy passenger trains on the Chesapeake Beach Railway's mainline until it was retired and scrapped in October of 1934 at the Seat Pleasant, Maryland, Shops. This photograph shows big #5 in all it's glory proudly sitting on the turntable located in the Seat Pleasant, Maryland, shops adjacent to the five stall roundhouse. |

Chesapeake Beach Railway #6 |
| Description: |
Built by the Pittsburgh Locomotive & Car Works in March of 1893 with construction number #1414, #6 was originally constructed for use on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad as their #98 and was shipped by Pittsburgh on March 22, 1893. The locomotive served the P&LE for about a decade pulling ore and steel products faithfully throughout the rust belt until it was sold to the Chesapeake Beach Railway in 1905. The locomotive served on the railroad until about 1924 when it was sidelined and scrapped at the Seat Pleasant, Maryland, shops. This photograph shows #6 in a decrepit state in the deadline waiting to be scrapped in the yards of the Seat Pleasant, Maryland, shops. |

The G W Pickering |
| Description: |
Date, location, and photographer are unknown. Built July 1854 by the Portland Works (SerNo68) it was Locomotive #1 for an MEC predcessor The Penobscot & Kennebec RR which ran between Waterville & Bangor in 1855. This locomotive became MEC #11. It was sold to the Credit Valley in May of 1879. A tip of the hat to Richard F Dole and William D Edison of the RLHS for the research I've drawn upon for this series of photographs. /DL |

No date with the photo, 1880s is my best guess without a lot of research. On the back of the photo - Maine Central No51 RI 187 16x24 - Building Union Station Portland, ME. - MEC #15 was named BELFAST and was built by the RI Works in 1871 and was sold in Sept of 1894. Photo was originally in the Walter Fogg collection. A tip of the hat of RR History #152 for locomotive background. /DL |

YV 4-4-0 #22 - Yosemite Valley RR |
| Description: |
Alco, 1907, one of a pair built by Alco Specs - serial #43167, class 22, 63" drivers, modest 165 psi boiler pressure, 18x26" cylinders, modest engine weight of 110,000 lb, very modest tractive effort of 18,753 lb. The little loco was scrapped in 1948. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. Although the correct reporting mark is YVRR, that current belongs to Yadkin Valley so I have listed it both as YVRR and just YV. |

LSMS 4-4-0 #24, "Chicago" - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern |
| Description: |
This is a very rare photograph of the inspection car built by Alco-Schenectady in 1906 as Lake Shore & Michigan Southern 4-4-0 #24 and carrying the name "Chicago". I found only one source of information on this loco - www.steamlocomotives.com. The website states " Unlike most inspection engines, the Chicago was built from scratch for the task. Its house extended from stack to footplate and was divided by a partition in front of the cab. The front room measured 12 feet long and had benches along the sides and two raised seats along the back. Especially thick boiler lagging protecting the occupants from the worst of the boiler's heat. The LS&MS gave a new name to the 24 in 1926, dubbing it "Mohawk". It was scrapped in June 1934. Specs - 66" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 15x24" cylinders, very modest engine wt of 99,500 lb and very modest tractive force of 14,806 lb." After searching the Alco-Schenectady records (Albert Webber III copy), I could not find the serial number for it. If you have additional info on this loco, please leave a comment below. |

BAR 4-6-0 #68 Boiler Explosion |
| Description: |
Nice older photo of the remains of BAR #68 after a boiler explosion some time in 1895. Specs - D-1 class, 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 20x26" cylinders, engine weight of 144,500 lb, tractive effort of 25,257 lb. Since this data base will not accept dates before 1900, it has been arbitrarily listed as 1/1/1900 although the correct date for the photo is 2/9/1895. The photo is from the Ray F. Higgins collection |

SLSF 4-4-0 #94 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) |
| Description: |
Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works built this 4-4-0 as Kansas City Osceola & Southern Railway 10 and named "John J. Blair" in 1894 and was one of the smallest 8-wheelers ever built for American railroads. It was in the Frisco designated class 44 and had 60" drivers and developed only 155 psi boiler pressure. Even so, it was "dismissed from services" in 1934 after 41 years. This may be another handmade photo copied from an original print. |
