Steaming up, coal loaded and ready to roll is Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive #7609 built by Baldwin in 1944 (serial #70071). The impressive loco was not the first choice by B&O (they wanted diesels) but war restrictions forced these onto the B&O roster. They proved powerful and fairly reliable until diesels replaced them. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO #659 and the loco was eventually scrapped in 1960. No date, location or photographer was listed for this great photo. |
